You Can Diet and Not Give Up This

Wednesday, December 05, 2018

Does dieting have you down? Well you are not alone. Many people get discouraged when trying to diet, and you know what? You really don't have to be. Some people will tell you that you can't eat this. You can't eat that. But that's not true. It's really all about moderation. Let's get rid of that thought process and let's take a look at three common food myths, along with a fool-proof way to lose weight that you can use no matter what you eat.

Carbohydrates Make Me So Fat

No they don't. Many carbohydrates that are considered "simple" (i.e., sugar, honey, fruit juice) are broken down by the body easily. They take no time to digest, and they have a high calorie content. It can be very easy to go overboard with sugar; Just a soda and a slice of cake per day can add in hundreds of calories. These foods are high in carbohydrates because they are high in sugar. Therefore, it is a common misconception that the carbohydrates themselves are to blame for the weight gain.

However, scientists have realized that this a myth. It doesn't really matter what you eat in the end, scientists suggest, but instead, it matters how much you eat. Calories in and calories out (CICO) determines how much weight you will gain. If the amount of calories you are eating, the calories in, match the number of calories you are burning (via just existing or exercise), the calories out, you will stay the same weight. If you eat more than you burn, you will gain weight. The amount of carbohydrates you eat will not affect this.

Butter is Not Good For You. Choose Margarine.

Not really. Butter has been blasted in recent years for having cholesterol and saturated fat. Margarine which is considered the “healthy” alternative without those bad things in it, found its way into the market on that myth. However, where margarine is lacking in cholesterol and saturated fat, some margarines make up for it in trans fats.

Trans fats have even worse effects on your heart health than cholesterol will. Additionally, many margarines are made of chemicals, preservatives, and filler products, while you can buy butter with just two simple ingredients: cream and salt. At the end of the day, both butter and margarine have the same amount of calories. Butter isn’t all that bad.

You Have to Give Up all Your Favorite Foods to Lose Weight

No you don't. As mentioned earlier, scientists have narrowed dieting down to a more or less exact science. It’s all about calories in and calories out (CICO). Essentially, you can eat whatever foods you want, as long as your calorie count is equal to what you burned that day, and you’ll never gain a pound. One scientist, to prove this point, went on a diet of Twinkies and junk for 10 weeks. He lost a whopping 27 pounds by the end, and all he had had to eat was pure junk food. It wasn't what he ate but the calories in was less than what he had been eating.  He attributes his success to CICO.

So keep eating what you want. Carbs, butter, all the “bad’ things. As long as you eat in moderation, and take in fewer calories than you burn, you’ll be losing weight in no time.
